Many European women were barred from being with native men. The census forms in Scotland and Northern Ireland did not include sub-groups, but rather single categories: Many Chinese men married British women while others remained single, possibly supporting a wife and family back home in China. The term has now been extended to include people whose parentage hails from Europe and all of Asia. I threw my lot in with everybody else before I found out it wasn't technically "me" the weird, stuck up people were rejecting.
